  8.     This file contains information not included in the printed manual or 
  9. help files.
  10.  
  11.  
  12. DEMO DISK
  13. ---------
  14.  
  15.     If you are using the demonstration disk, the program will run for 10
  16. minutes before stopping.  You can run the program again, but only for another
  17. 10 minute period.  You will also not be able to save memory data.  IN ALL
  18. OTHER RESPECTS THE DEMO PROGRAM IS THE SAME AS THE FULL VERSION. 
  19.  
  20.     When you order the full version of AOR Searchlight you should delete
  21. the "AOR Demo" program group and erase the "C:\AORDEMO" directory from your
  22. hard disk.  A new program group is created for the full installation.
  23.  
  24.  
  25. SPEED OF TUNING OPERATIONS
  26. --------------------------
  27.  
  28.     The speed of tuning operations over RS-232 is much slower than 
  29. directly from the radio's front panel.  This is because the radio must 
  30. receive RS-232 commands, process them and produce a response.  No 
  31. communications handling is needed for operations from the radio's own
  32. front panel.  Under Windows, tuning operations are further slowed by 
  33. the response time of your system.
  34.  
  35.     You can adjust the delay period used for tuning and S-meter reads,
  36. for optimum performance, from the "Setup|Delays" menu option.  However, the 
  37. maximum speed of tuning operations during scanning operations will probably 
  38. still be limited by the speed of your system when running Windows.
  39.  
  40.     You can optimise your tuning speed by:
  41.  
  42.     1. Choosing minimum tuning and S-meter delays that work with your radio
  43.     2. Not running other applications in the background
  44.     3. Covering the VFO status window, or minimising it, to reduce redrawing
  45.  
  46.     As a guide, you should be able to obtain maximum scanning speeds
  47. using the following timings:
  48.  
  49.         AR-3000A                                AR-3000
  50. Tuning           10 ms                                   20 ms
  51. S-meter          10 ms                                   60 ms
  52. Upload          250 ms                                  250 ms
  53. Download        150 ms                                  150 ms
  54.  
  55.  
  56. HELP INFORMATION
  57. ----------------
  58.  
  59.     Extensive help information is available through the context sensitive
  60. hypertext help system provided by Windows.  The size of the user's manual has
  61. been reduce to take this into account.  Detailed printed manuals are no longer
  62. needed by most Windows users.
  63.  
  64.  
  65. RUNNING WINDOWS AND AOR SEARCHLIGHT FROM THE DOS PROMPT
  66. -------------------------------------------------------
  67.  
  68.     Normally, AOR Searchlight should be started within Windows by double 
  69. clicking on the icon within the AOR Searchlight group in Program Manager. 
  70. However, it is also possible to start Windows and launch AOR Searchlight from 
  71. your DOS prompt using the following sequence of commands:
  72.  
  73.         CD\SEARCH
  74.         WIN SEARCH
  75.  
  76.     This assumes that the directory containing the program files is the 
  77. default "\SEARCH" directory.
  78.  
  79.     You may find it useful to create a batch file with these commands in 
  80. it if you frequently need to start AOR Searchlight in this way.  
  81.  
  82.  
  83. RUNNING MULTIPLE COPIES OF AOR SEARCHLIGHT
  84. ------------------------------------------
  85.  
  86.     Windows allows up to four serial ports to be used by application 
  87. software.  Normally, one is reserved for the mouse, which leaves three that 
  88. can be used by AOR Searchlight.  More than one copy of Searchlight can be 
  89. used at the same time if you have more than one AOR radio connected to your 
  90. computer.
  91.  
  92.     You can run more than one copy of AOR Searchlight by launching each 
  93. copy from the program group one after the other.  Each additional copy of AOR 
  94. Searchlight uses the default setup obtained from "SEARCH.INI".  Use the 
  95. Setup|Communications option of the main menu to change the serial port to that 
  96. used with your additional radios.
  97.  
  98.     The current serial port, and it's parameters, is displayed in the title 
  99. of the main AOR Searchlight window.
  100.  
  101.     Only the original copy of AOR Searchlight can alter the "SEARCH.INI" 
  102. file.
  103.  
  104.  
  105. KEYBOARD OPERATION
  106. ------------------
  107.  
  108.     You can use your keyboard to operate controls in the Front Panel window.
  109. The following keys are active:
  110.  
  111.         A               Select VFO A
  112.         B               Select VFO B
  113.         U               Tune up one step
  114.         D               Tune down one step
  115.         +               Increase step size
  116.         -               Decrease step size
  117.         O               Set VFO offset
  118.         S               Enter user step size
  119.         N               Toggle attenuator
  120.         T               Toggle VFO tracking
  121.         <F1>            Select AM mode
  122.         <F2>            Select CW mode
  123.         <F3>            Select USB mode
  124.         <F4>            Select LSB mode
  125.         <F5>            Select FM mode
  126.         <F6>            Select FMW mode
  127.  
  128. SOUND RECORDING
  129. ---------------
  130.  
  131.     This is probably the most powerful feature of the software.  There are 
  132. no special procedures needed for using sound recording: AOR Searchlight uses 
  133. standard Windows API functions and should work perfectly with all compatible 
  134. sound cards.
  135.  
  136.     A common problem is blank recordings either when recording or playing 
  137. back.  If you have this problem, you probably need to check the settings 
  138. controlled by the mixer utility that came with your card.  You need to make 
  139. sure that audio from the radio is the input source (normally the "line" input) 
  140. and that wave audio (referred to as "Voc" by Creative Labs Sound Blaster) is 
  141. selected for output.
  142.  
  143.     Please refer to your sound card manuals for further details.
  144.  
  145.  
  146. COPY PROTECTION
  147. ---------------
  148.  
  149.     AOR Searchlight is copy protected using a system which places a token 
  150. on your hard disk when you install the program.  The program will only work on 
  151. the disk you installed it to.  There is no dongle or key-disk, so once 
  152. installed the program runs completely normally and you will not be 
  153. inconvenienced (unlike other schemes).
  154.  
  155.     Specific points to remember:
  156.  
  157. 1. The distribution disk contains a two tokens.  This means that you can 
  158. install up to two complete copies of the software on separate machines 
  159. at once.  You cannot transfer the program to another machine without 
  160. first moving one of the tokens back onto the original distribution disk 
  161. then re-installing.  The tokens can easily be moved with the program 
  162. that is provided.  Contact your AOR distributor if you need additional 
  163. copies of the software.
  164.  
  165. 2. You should keep you original disk in a safe place away from strong magnetic 
  166. fields, high humidity or other environmental conditions that could damage it.  
  167. You will not be able to re-install the software or move it to another machine 
  168. without the original distribution disk.
  169.  
  170. 3. Two hidden files are copied to a hidden subdirectory of the AOR Searchlight
  171. directory (SEARCH.CCC and CCONTROL.SYS) when you install the software.  
  172. These contain configuration information for the copy protection scheme and are 
  173. normal DOS format files.  DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES UNDER ANY 
  174. CIRCUMSTANCES.  If these files are deleted, AOR Searchlight will not run.
  175.  
  176. 4. If you are using a backup utility, make sure that the two hidden files are 
  177. not backed up.  When restored, the copy protection scheme may not be able to 
  178. validate the installation and AOR Searchlight will not run.  Most backup 
  179. utilities do not touch these files because they have the hidden, system and 
  180. read-only attributes set.  The two copy protection files also do not have the 
  181. archive bit set, so you should be able to exclude them from backups by setting 
  182. up your backup software to ignore files without an archive bit.  Remember, it 
  183. is not the backup but the restore that can cause problems.
  184.  
  185. 5. The /d+ option of the PC-Kwik disk cache software from Multisoft Corporation 
  186. is not compatible with the copy protection scheme and should be temporarilly 
  187. disabled when installing AOR Searchlight or moving the token.  HyperCache also 
  188. affects the copy protection scheme in the same way because of non-standard 
  189. methods of accessing the floppy disk drive.  Again, it should be temporarily 
  190. disabled, but both caches may be used at other times.
  191.  
  192. 6. The copy protection scheme is compatible with disk drives compressed with 
  193. SuperStor, Stacker and DoubleSpace.  However, you should temporarily remove 
  194. the token from the hard disk when installing one of these compression 
  195. utilities because the protection will appear invalid when the drives are 
  196. compressed.  The disk compression utilities warn you of this in their manuals.
  197.  
  198. 7.  The copy protection scheme is known to be compatible with the following 
  199. disk defragmenters: Central Point's Compress, Digital Research's Diskopt, 
  200. Stac's Sdefrag and Microsoft's Defrag.
  201.  
  202. 8.  The copy protection scheme is not currently compatible with Windows NT.
  203.  
  204. 9.  The copy protection scheme is not compatible with non-standard floppy
  205. disk systems.  At present (7/95) this includes the following PCs:
  206.  
  207.     Evesham Vale Voyager laptop
  208.     Zeos Pentiums
  209.  
  210. It is possible to install onto a PC with a non-standard floppy disk (or no
  211. floppy disk) using a networked standard drive.  The easiest way to do this
  212. if you do not already have a network is to use the INTERLNK or INTERSVR
  213. utilities supplied with MS-DOS.
  214.  
  215. 10.  The copy protection scheme is compatible with Windows 95.  However,
  216. you can completely erase your tokens using Explorer to drag and drop the
  217. AOR Searchlight directory onto the Recycle bin.  Although the token files are
  218. not deleted, they cannot be restored to their original positions on disk.
  219. EXPLORER DOES NOT GIVE WARNINGS LIKE FILE MANAGER UNDER WINDOWS 3.X!.
  220.  
  221.  
  222. IMPORTING PC-MANAGER MEMORY DATA
  223. --------------------------------
  224.  
  225.     It is now possible to import memory data from PC-MANAGER or 
  226. PC-MANAGER memory data created by other AOR applications. An extra menu
  227. option has been added to the "Memory" menu: "Import from PC-MANAGER".
  228.  
  229. This new feature reads ASCII text files containing AR8000 memory data of
  230. the form:
  231.  
  232.     MXA00 RF0076075000 ST02500 MD1 AT0 TM-79dBm 
  233.  
  234. and converts it to AOR Searchlight format.  The ASCII text file name must
  235. have the extension .MEM and should be copied into the AOR Searchlight 
  236. directory before conversion.
  237.  
  238. Importing creates one or more AOR Searchlight memory files (also with the
  239. .MEM extension).  The output filename(s) are the same as the input except
  240. that a two-digit count is added to the end of the name.  For example,
  241. the ASCII input filename "TEST.MEM" is converted to "TEST00.MEM", 
  242. "TEST01.MEM", etc...  This allows the data to be broken up into several
  243. Searchlight memory files if needs be.
  244.  
  245.  
  246. USING SCREEN SAVERS
  247. -------------------
  248.  
  249. Some screen savers may interfere with Searchlight when they first operate.
  250. Under some circumstances a run time error can occur because of the 
  251. addition of extra system resources that these screen savers demand.  For 
  252. reliable operation over long periods, screen savers should be disabled.
  253.
